CO SCHOLARSHIPS

THE CHRISTOPHER J. AND PENSAL McCRAY SCHOLARSHIP was established to commemorate their great contributions to community, education, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Dr. Christophe J. McCray, as the first African-American Optometrist in Denver, established a successful medical practice. Pensal McCray was a piano teacher and founder of the Ethnic College Counseling Center (ECCC). Dr. McCray assisted and supported Mrs. McCray; they believed every child could go to college.

The Scholarship supports America’s HBCUs by helping high achieving students pursue higher education

at an HBCU. The award, funded by individuals, businesses, and organizations in the community, provides nonrenewable scholarships to deserving high school juniors and seniors who are members of the ECCC

with at least a 3.0 GPA. Recipients must retain full-time status at an accredited four-year HBCU. Depending

on funds available, up to$1,000 (or more) will be applied toward tuition or room and board.

2026 Amaiyah Broxton

Amaiyah Broxton graduated from Aurora’s Regis Jesuit High School where she served as co-president of the school's choral group, the Canta Belles. In recognition of her academic achievement, leadership, and community service, Amaiyah was invited to be a Belle at Denver’s 38th annual Jack and Jill of America Beautillion, an event recognizing outstanding African American high school juniors and seniors for excellence in academics and community service. Her community efforts include volunteering for the Nathan Yip Foundation to support rural education and provide companionship to elders in local memory care facilities. In high school she was a student journalist who acquired valuable media credentials creating and producing content for RJ Media Now. Currently a Criminal Justice major at HBCU Fisk University, she hopes to attend law school. She believes these studies will hone her leadership skills and facilitate her continuing commitment to community service.

The SACHS FOUNDATION offers up to $6000 per year tuition for four years to qualifying
